A couple of years ago I began the groundwork for creating a coffee-table style book (working title ‘Images of Miramichi – The Lodges’); to feature photographs of a selection of the historic and storied fly-fishing lodges located along New Brunswick’s famous Miramichi River. A river acknowledged in fly-fishing circles as “the place” to be for wild Atlantic Salmon.

My purpose for this project is two-fold; firstly, as I was raised on the Miramichi it is a subject of personal interest, and secondly, as time goes by there are fewer remaining outfitters operating. Those left are getting on in years and will not be around forever.

To date I have compiled a spreadsheet cataloging about 50 lodges. In February 2004, I participated in the 50th anniversary of the annual Miramichi Salmon Association dinner & symposium, held in Boston, USA.

Also in 2004, I secured permission from famed sportscaster Curt Gowdy Sr. to lend his name to the Introduction portion of my book. Mr. Gowdy was a close friend of Boston Red Sox legend the late Ted Williams, and Curt knew the Miramichi well, having visited Ted several times at his fly-fishing lodge at Barnettville.

On February 20th, 2006 Mr. Gowdy passed away at age 86 at his winter home in West Palm Beach, Florida. I will always appreciate that he did a favour for a stranger.

In the summer of 2005 I visited the Miramichi to photograph several lodges, including Slate Island, Deadman, and Clearwater.
